This tree was hit by lightening sometime over the winter.

Caden helps burn brush

Caden was here last Saturday, helping us to burn brush.

First he watches Pop cut branches.

Then he holds the gate open.  Actually, he likes to twist the chain around, but that's ok.

Caden stands back while Pop is making smoke,

But finally there is fire.

The tree line is cleaned up. Until the next store anyways.  But it sure looks pretty.

Pop surprises Caden with a cowboy hat he found!  He looks pretty snazzy.  My newest cowboy!  Looks just like he daddy did!

Fall Horse Pics

The mares are weaned 3 weeks ago.

Dove is saying, where did my mom go?

Chick and the other mares.

Dixie

The 4 mares got along very well together. They have been pasture mates before. No one fights, and they just exist together.  I think it helped the most when Dixie and Chick were put together last winter, to get to eat a little more grain.  They really bonded together. But Chick would rather be with Starlet and Goldie.

The trees were this pretty for almost 2 weeks. But that was about 3 weeks ago when I was weaning. They have since lost their leaves and are now barren.

Chick and Dixie have since gone back into the lot with the weanlings, so the 2 harder keepers are able to eat more over the winter. Starlet and Goldie are now in the larger lot of 8 horses. Dixie may join them, as she is starting to be a little bully with the babies. And she is fat enough! But I'll probably wait until Spring to move horses around.

Everyone is being good and not fighting, so I don't want to upset the apple cart. It's good for those babies to get pushed around a little and to know their place in life. They aren't getting hurt, so it's probably a good thing to just leave Dixie in there to teach those 2 babies about respect!

Winter Ice

Winter rain, sleet, and ice! Lovely! This is what we woke up to today. Ice is everywhere. 20 degrees and misty rain. Roads were slick, but by noon, they were wet and manageable.

The only good thing about ice is seeing the trees all frosted!

But by afternoon, small branches were falling off. I sure hope large branches don't break during the night. I've heard branches snapping and breaking when they have been covered with ice. It sure makes a loud noise! By late afternoon, the temp dropped to 11 degrees. The wind picked up and it was brisk to do chores.

And I love the pines. They look so feathery and are very pretty. Tomorrow, I'll stay home and enjoy the winter wonderland that I'm sure I will wake up to. We are expecting snow tonight and tomorrow.

Macro Monday "PINE NEEDLES with Icicles"

Monday, January 4, 2010

This week's Macro Monday photo is one of my close ups of the pine trees. After the ice and sleet, the pine needles looked so fragile, with icicles hanging from each needle.
